Tamils in Sri Lanka
By: Jacob Smith and Wasif Ahmed
Sir Lankan Tamils. Violence has been dominated within the Sinhalese and the Tamil. For this local dispute, youths have join Guerilla Bases in the Tamil dominated north and East of the island. In the 1980’s the government sent in troops to stop them. They had a very hard time. The Tamil Tigers were the largest liberation group that controlled the bases. The Sinhalese later launched many attacks on the “Tigers” in and around Colombo. The government had a proposal that would stop both from fighting anymore. After both the Sinhalese and the Tigers rejected it, the government made it unconstitutional to reject the proposal. Some might say that the Tamils aren’t or shouldn’t be Sri Lankans. They’re wrong for two different things. Its racism and they are just like every other Sri Lankan. The coffee is widely drunk throughout their culture; they tend to eat more seafood than anything, and many foods are served with rice, lentils, and yogurt. Also when eating meat it will usually be mutton or chicken, but just as spicy as the vegetables. Not only for food do they act normal just like any other family. The Tamil women have more extreme and “different” colors than most women in India and Sri Lanka. The men wear a Lungis or Dhotiswith a western style of shirt. Married couples reward each other by offering sex to each other. Women also help out with household chores as well as weeding and assisting men during harvest season. Different roles are fixed for the lower, middle, and higher class of society that they fall underneath in. Caste system applies to them also. The Indian Tamil and the Sri Lanka Tamil tend not to ‘mix’ with each other. Many think that they are useless, but that’s a bunch of bologna. Everyone and thing is put on this earth for a reason. They could I guess depending on your view of life, be in fact useless. Some numbers for you: 1. 30% live in towns or cities. 2. 18% are urban families or single people 3. Are the most consistent poverty in Sri Lanka 4. were included in the Presidency in 1857 5. Tamil is older than any contemporary European language 6. 90% of Tamils are Hindus 7. 8% are Muslims or Christians 8. Have participated in the movement called Bhakti 9. Commonly misunderstood for vegetarians because meat is not commonly used, but when done its mutton or chicken.
