During his recovery, Henry and Catherine fall in love with each other. After his recovery Henry tries to plan a trip with Catherine, but he finds out that Catherine is pregnant. Henry is then diagnosed with jaundice, he is sent to the front when his illness is cleared. Once in the front, the Germans broke through Italian lines and the Italians were forced to retreat. On their evacuation route to Udine, Henry and his team pick up two engineers and some frightened girls. They decide to take a different route and get stuck in the mud. Soldiers arrested Henry but he was able to escape and jumped into a river where he was washed away. Henry then gets out of the river and jumps on a military train to Milan to see Catherine. He finds out that she is in a town called Stressa and boards another train to Stressa. He reunites with Catherine and meets a friendly helper named Emilio. He helps them escape by giving them his boat, he also saves Henry by warning him that the police were going to arrest him. Henry and Catherine row away to Switzerland in a tiny boat.
