Science Project/Dolphins
By Pleum and Yong Eui (Sarawid Pisitthakarn) 8X Hanoi International School Teacher : Mr.Matt
By Pleum Why some animals’ population decreases so fast? Animal’s population decreasing means the amount of some kinds of animals going down with some factors. If they are decreasing very quickly that may be a very big problem cause to other parts of the earth. Decreasing some animals makes other increasing but this is not the exact good thing because it impacts the balance of the food chain. The causes can be from many reasons for example disease spreading, natural calamity, too much predators or hunters, scarcity food and invading habitats. If decreasing is much more than increasing it will be extinct. The humans can be get impact too. Nowadays, there are many animals face the decreasing problem their amount sea animals, and wild animals or even our pets either. Recently, global organization (The Environmental Investigation Agency, International Whaling Commission (IWC), the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) and Greenpeace) concerned about dolphins population decreasing very fast. Generally, dolphins are social animals well known for their playful and carefree nature. They can learn to understand complicated language-like commands. Dolphins can be found in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, though they prefer warm to tropical water. They swim slowly on surface of the sea when they want to breathe. Dolphins are being threatened, and its number is declining due to human activities. The known mortality rate of the dolphins is significant and come to the unsustainable level. The threats currently observed have the greatest impact to the dolphin population for example accidental entanglement with gillnets, catch in seine nets, illegal fishing practices (e.g. electric and dynamite fishing), boat collision and contacts, environmental pollution and dam/waterway construction. Some factors are currently less threatening, but have the potential to cause serious problems in the future for example the use of dolphin body parts for traditional medicine, habitat degradation and over-fishing especially in Taiji City in Japan. The population of the dolphin is decreasing at an alarming speed. However, because of the increasing threats described above, it is essential to implement countermeasures as soon as possible. Furthermore, the conservation activities should be conducted in parallel with education and awareness activities in order to make people understood its significance of the dolphin as well as to cooperate with all community members such activities.
Dolphin is one spicy of the Mammal Family. They’ve been here for 65 million years and are very intelligent and complex marine mammals. They’re entitled to freedom. There are about 32 species of dolphins. It has grey color and a pinkish grey at the stomach and has 18-26 pairs of sharp teeth in its mouth. An estimate of a dolphin length can be 6-12 feet and its weight can be about 1430 lbs. After dolphin’s babies are born, in 1st year they can double their size and weight. They can jump as high as 20 feet in the air. Dolphins breathe by opening their blow hole. Dolphins can understand people by using sign language. There are many organizations concerning about the dolphin’s problems for example The Environmental Investigation Agency, International Whaling Commission (IWC), the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) and Greenpeace. They would stop and to help save the dolphins and whales from the Japanese fleet because the Government of Japan allows people caught dolphins and whales around the Japanese coast in unregulated and unsustainable hunts. In my opinion, the reason for this slaughter is they are over-fishing and want to kill the competition for the fish. It seems to be pest control. Japan continues to hunt dolphins under the guise of using such actions to study their habits. In reality, the meat generally ends up on dinner tables for some cities, Teiji City. Many Physicians for Social Responsibility were worried about mercury poisoning. Power plants are the source of approximately one third of the nation's mercury pollution. Mercury released from power plants accumulates in the food chain and can be ingested as part of our diet. Food chains are used to show what eats what in an ecosystem. Every food chains start with producer (plants). A food chain must have arrows to show how the nutrients go from one organism to another. The best food chains are presented in straight lines. Individuals can also be exposed to mercury into the sea or ocean where dolphins and other fish live. A series of scientific studies in recent years in Japan have documented high levels of mercury in dolphin meat. Symptoms of methyl mercury poisoning can include impaired vision, speech and hearing, loss of coordination, reproductive disorders, paralysis, and severe cases resulting in coma or death. When people hunt dolphins unregulated for eating, for fun or any reasons, it means we are destroying sea’s food chains. Finally, the retribution will return to us. I see the dolphin as a reference point and a symbol of our relationship with the sea. They are belonging to the world not for only Japanese. Please save dolphins and other living things. I believe when the world protecting the ocean provides us never starve.
By Yong Eui Charles Darwin origin of Species The Origin of Species was written by an English naturalist called Charles Darwin. Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, on February 12, 1809. He was born in a wealthy family. He studied about medicine and theology. One day in 1831 he had a chance to go on a scientific trip. The Origin of Species is about what Charles Darwin saw and thought about the things he saw while he was travelling with the HMS Beagle which is mainly about evolution. Everywhere the Beagle stopped Charles stopped and observed the plants and animals. Charles Darwin saw lots of kinds of similar species of animals. He saw mocking birds and tortoise and he saw that every kind of tortoise and mocking birds are slightly different. He put his thinking together and thought the species in different kinds of food to eat and had different environment in each island and where the mocking birds lived. So Charles Darwin said birds compete for foods and the birds changed their beaks by the types of food they eat and also all the species not only birds were descended from common ancestors like the humans became humans because the monkeys to Homo sapiens adapted themselves to their environment and the food they eat. Like the video we saw on Mr. Matt folder and what Mr. Matt gave the papers we don’t use the things we need and get useless like for the teeth at the back of our mouth. But for example the video we saw had a pig and “dogish” like animal and it couldn’t fin food on the land or maybe it couldn’t compete with others so it found food on water, so it kept finding water so the arm and legs split and became fins after a million years. We call the theory of evolution the natural selection. But after Charles Darwin wrote the origin of Species the religious people attacked the most because they think God made people. But my opinion is that evolution is right because it is heard quite fancy but also they have the right meaning and things to support it, like God made people just snap the finger and then several billion people appear? First that can’t happen so I support the natural selection.
