This is a picture of the Massachusets 54th regiment. The first black armed forces in America. Led by Robert Shaw and proposed by the Governor of Massachusets John A. Andrew. The Massachsets 54th regiment is most famous for its battle at Fort Wagner. They were the first group to attack Fort Wagner, this is a famous example of African-Americans fighting in the war.
The African-Americans played and important part in the Union Army. The African-Americans were either free or runaway slaves. There was just about the 180,00 African-Americans that fought for the Union Army.
African-Americans were discriminated in various different ways. The most common way they were being discriminated was there pay. They were paid significantly low compared to white soldiers. Black soliders made 10 dollars a month and got a deduction fee for clothing. That was the most common way they were discriminated.
Some important battles: The first Kansas colored volunteers attacked Confederate guerrillas at the Skirmish at Island Mound, Missouri in October 1862. Another important battle was the battle at Fort Pilloww. Nathan Bedford Forrest killed about 200 African-American soldiers. Also, from 1864-65 African American soldiers were a part of major battles except one, the Atlanta Campaign in Georgia
