Ptolemy I Sotor was a friend of Alexander the Great in his youth. At Susa, in 324 BC he married a daughter of the satrap Artabazus. He then divorced her and married the Eurydice of Macedonian and they had 6 children. When Alexander died, Ptolemy I made himself satrap. In the following year he took Cyrene. In the complex struggles of Alexander's successors he was not very successful at first. However in 291 he controlled the Aegean League of Islanders. Ptolemy became King in 305 BC. He was responsible for initiating a Greek speaking administration in Egypt, and he consulted Egyptians (Manetho and others), using their local expertise. There are few papyri from his reign, but hieroglyphic inscriptions from the Delta present him as a traditional pharaoh. Also, by moving the capital from Memphisto to Alexandria he made Egypt come into the mainstream of the Hellenistic world. Ptolemy I wrote a history of the reign of Alexander. Its title, length and its date of composition are not known today. Ptolemy stressed his personal contribution to the campaign and suppressed the achievements of his foes.
