You should be finishing up Sister Carrie. So, now is the time to think about how you want to understand the narrative as a whole
Your goal in this "glogster" assignment is to create a multimedia introduction to Dreiser's novel. Think about this introduction as a guide for your classmates to the most significant cultural theme in Sister Carrie.
To make this introduction you'll need to:
First, think about some of the major cultural themes we've looked at in the novel - - including, gender roles (the domestic ideal), commodity culture (the department store), and class (the tramp). These themes are of course related to other major themes in Sister Carrie - - "drifting," the nature of desire (and ambition), character versus personality, and "the modern" or modernity. Which of these themes do you find the most interesting, significant or helpful?
Next, review the work you've already done on these themes in your wiki pages.
Next, work the the novel, finding and reviewing key scenes, characters, or moments related to your theme. This way, you'll have a reservoir of examples and illustrations to use.
Then, assemble the multimedia resources you'll need to explain and illustrate these themes. You can use some of the linked material on the wiki, or you can scavenge amongst the possible resources below.
Finally, use Glogster to assemble your introduction. Two things to keep in mind here: your glogster should help students to understand the novel (e.g. not just create a pretty scrapbook) - - it should contain rich analytic explanations of the connections between cultural contexts and Carrie's themes; second, think about design - - the introduction should be visually organized (remember, your goal is to help a fellow reader of the novel).
