Scylla and Charybdis
Point of view- first person. '' I saw smoke and white water, with the sound of tumult'' Conflict- the conflict is that Odysseus and his crew must pass between Scylla and Charybdis, and how either way he will lose some of his men. Symbolism- Scylla eating six of Odysseus's men symbolizes sacrifice. In order for the crew to pass between Scylla and Charybdis some men had to die in order for the rest to be saved. Characterization- '' She ate them as they shrieked there, in her den, in the dire grapple, reaching still for me- and deathly pity ran through at that sight- far the worst I ever suffered, questing the passes of the strange sea.'' This shows that Odysseus really cares for his crew and truly feels the loss, but he knows that its the only way for the rest to be able to pass through.
Epithet- ''the monster of the gray rock'' in reference to Scylla.
Epic Simile- ''When she vomited, all the see was like a caldron seething over intense fire, when the mixture suddenly heaves and rises'' This is showing how when Scylla spits the see back out its like a chaotic whirlpool much like how a caldron over an intense fire is.
The Odyssey
Epic Hero- An example of how Odysseus is an epic hero is when he tried to keep the men going by staying possative and telling them to keep going and how they have been strong before.
