Irony
Verbal
"...I can tell you other stories, but such private things, I don't want you should mention." (p 23)
Artie promises not to put his story with Mala into his graphic novel, but we know that he did write about it all because we are reading about out it in his book today. It i verbal irony because Artie said one thing but did the opposite.
Situational
"When they didn't stop the train I became very worried." "The train completely past my part of Poland- the reich- and stopped only in the protectorate." (p. 60)
Dramatic
Vladek thinks that he is getting out of prison and everything is going to get better. Growing up, many of us have learned about the Holocaust in the past and we all know that the guards would tell the Jews that they were going somewhere just to get them onto the train. This is dramatic irony because the audience knows what is going to happen but the characters don't.
"Always Tosha carried around her neck some poison... She killed only herself, but also the three children." (p. 109)
Anja hands her child over to Tosha. She thought that this would keep her son safe and out of harms way during the war. She killed herself and all the children in her care. This makes it situational irony because in reality, Anja's son could have been safer in her care instead of Tosha's care.
