Use of Time
In the book there are two primary narratives. One is the present in which we learn about Vladek, Artie and Mala after the war. The other one is Vladek narrative when he tells us about his past. The third use of time would be when Vladek finds Arties comic he once drew ( p.99 – 104). All this different flashback gives the reader multiple perspectives. We think, that this is an attempt to keep the book more objective and to avoid too much subjectivity on Vladeks or Artie’s side. The use of different times also lets the reader see how much the past influenced the present. Especially the father-son relationship is shaped by Vladek’s past. The reader can understand how the relationship between the two developed.
