ELIZABETH BATHORY (1560-1614)
The Blood Countess
Elizabeth, to this day, is known as one of the most terrifiying female serial killers to have ever lived.. Accounts of the deaths and tourture she inflicted upon these girls are brutal and bloody. She had many ''servant'' girls and used them as her prey. One of the devices she used was the Iron Maiden.
This clockwork doll was of the size and colour of a human creature. Naked, painted, covered in jewels, with blond hair that reached down to the ground, it had a mechanical device that allowed it to curve its lips into a smile, and to move its eyes.
For the Maiden to spring into action it was necessary to touch some of the precious stones in its necklace. Erzsebet would instruct a servant girl to fix the jewels on the Iron Maiden, and when a certain jewel was moved, the Maiden would grab the girl, spikes would come out of the breasts, and the girl would quickly bleed to death. Once the sacrifice is over another stone in the necklace is touched: the arms drop, the smile and the eyes fall shut, and the murderess becomes once again the Maiden, motionless in its coffin.
Elizabeth was very beautiful woman. she had long raven hair and unsually pale skin. Elizabeth was very vain. As she got older she desperately searched for ways to retain her youthful beauty. Upon one of her tourture sessions a drop of the girls blood landed on her hand and she thought it revived her beauty. She then began to bathe in the blood of young virgins.
Eventually people go suspicious of why so many girls were turning up outside her castle dead and drained of blood.. They had heard stories of the things she had done but never found any evidence. One night in December the Prime Minister of Hungary sent soldiers in to storm her castle. What they found was the very picture of carnage, blood splattered on the walls, corpses lying on the floor and a few girls locked in cells, waiting for their turn to die.
Elizabeth was arrested but, for political reasons, never tried for the murders she had commited. In the end the body count was a little over 600 women. Elizabeth was walled up inside a room of her castle, with only a small opening for food and water to be pushed through. After three years of being imprisoned she was found lying face down on the floor, dead.
