Although my radiant personality has won me many loyal and loving friends it is also true that I have my enemies. For example, Cobalt-60 has recently taken over a job of mine that I was very proud of! Up until it was taken away from me I helped treat cancer. The gamma rays I radiate were directed at the tumor to kill it. My discoverer and one of my very first friends, Marie Curie, died of leukemia which she got from working with me and other radioactive substances. Being used to treat cancer was my way of helping to redeem myself for that slip up!
Marie Curie was a really awesome friend. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, first person to win two Nobel Prizes, the only person to win both in the same field, and the mother of another Nobel Prize winner! She moved to France in 1891 to study physics and married Pierre Curie in 1895.

Friends (and enemies)
I was first found in pitchblende, along with polonium and uranium, but I'm over a million times as reactive as uranium! In fact, Marie Curie's handwritten notes are still too radioactive to be handled.
I decay into radon, which is much safer and decays a lot quicker.
Polonium was found in the pitchblende before me. Pitchblende is an ore of uranium. Polonium was named after Poland where Marie Curie was born.
