Sect. 2 Cell Division

This section is all about how the cell divides and the process it takes to do so. There are two major stages of cell division are mitosis and cytokinesis. The life cycle of a cell is either dividing or growing. The growing part of the cell cycle is called the interphase. There are four stages in mitosis. They are prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. After this is cytokinesis takes place which is the cells act to split into two. Here is a diagram to explain mitosis.

This is about how the cell regulates these processes that were in the first two sections. Cyclins regulate the timing of the cell cycle in eukaryotic cells. There are also internal and external regulators that respond to events inside and outside of a cell to make sure no colflicts happen. Sometimes these conflicts do happen like uncontrolled cell growth. This is what cancer is and cancer cells do not respond to the signals that regulate the growth of most cells. As cells get older, they grow and get bigger. The ratio between the surface area that collects the nutrients and the volume of the cell becomes smaller.The larger a cell becomes, the more demands the cell places on its DNA. In addition, the cell has more trouble moving enough nutrients and wastes across the cell membrane. Instead of the cell becoming too large, it divides. Here is a picture of an animmal cell.
