8-3 Reactants of Photosynthesis

This section is a quick synopsis of photosynthesis. This is the process which plants go through to make energy for themselves. It uses the sun's rays to make food for itself. Plants gather these rays in a pigment called chlorophyll. In a nutshell plants take water and through chemical reactions, oxygen is released. In another part of the process, carbon dioxide enters the plant and through other chemical reactions, sugar used for energy is produced. Here is a picture of photosynthesis.

This section give the whole deal on photosynthesis. There are two stages of photosynthesis, light dependent and light independent reactions. The light dependent reaction which takes place in thylakoids, recieves light and excites electrons in the chloroplast. When this happens, NADP+ takes two of these and makes NADPH. Also the bond of ADP+P occurs and ATP is created. When all of that is said and done, oxygen is released from the plant. The other part of the reaction is called the Calvin Cycle. This takes the ATP and the NADPH from the light dependent reaction and uses those with the CO2 from the air and makes sugar molecules for energy for the plant. Right is a video of the Calvin Cycle.

This section is about the basis of energy needs for organisms. There are two types of organisms, autotrophs and heterotrophs. Autotrophs make their own food used for energy and heterotrophs consume food in order to get enerrgy. Most organisms use one principal form of energy.This chemical compounds that cells use to store and release energy is adenosine triphosphate. Here is an example of a heterotoph.
