Western and Eastern Front

Life on the Front Line

Major Battles

On these two fronts, there were many battles fought on them, especially on the western front. The western front is on the west side of Germany and on the eastern side of France. Some of these included the battle of the Marne, where the Germans were to exicute their Schleiffen Plan to take Paris where it almost worked until Joseph Joffre saved the French by defending against the Germans sucessfully. Another battle on the western front is the Battle of Somme where in 1916, Britian and France gained 12 kilometers but lost a million people. The eastern front is on the eastern siide of Germany and on the western side of Russia. One of the battles on the eastern front is the Batte of Tannenburg where the Russian Army suffered a huge defeat. This would be the story for many of the battles on the eastern front up until 1917 where Russia backed out of the war to take care of proplems at home. This had a huge impact on the war because it meant Gremany could fight a one front war now. Below is a picture of a German front defending an attack

Life on the front line was extreamly tough. Some of the things that soliders had to go through were so horrible. They had to stay in these trenches for possibly months at a time just waiting to attack. The trenches were not exactly a luxury hotel either. Some soliders were standing in feet of water that was totally infested with disease. If the solider had a open wound on them which almost all did, the water would get into your wound and you would get diseases like trench foot. There was also a lot of lice that caused trench fever. Also rats by the thousands were down in these trenches feeding on human remains. Some soliders like the rats because it was a source of food. All of this was the living style for a solider in WW1. Strategies

The strategies used in this war were qutie simple. One side would leave the trench and cross No Mans Land. They would run toward the opposition and try to kill everyone in the trench or make then surrender. While this happens the side defending the attack would stay in the trench and they would just kill anyone coming toward them till they retreat or they're all dead. On the western front this would happen to both sides a lot because for a while the war was back and forth. On the eastern front it was mostly Gemany attacking because when Russia would try to attack they would lose way too many people and they stopped trying to attack.
