18th Amendment The 18th Amendment prohibited the sale, transportation, or manufacturing of alcoholic beverages thus making the United States a 'dry' country. Prohibition was started by a movement in Europe called the Temperance movement. Those part of this movement believed that alcohol caused laziness and increased the crime rate. The 18th Amendment was ratified January 16, 1919.
21st Amendment The 21st Amendment was proposed by Senator John Blaine of Wisconsin was proposed on December 6, 1932. The 21st Amendment repealed the 18th amendment which prohibited the sale, transport, or manufacturing of alcohol. It was passed by Congress on February 20, 1933 and sent to the states for ratification and took affect on December 5, 1933.
