facts *The element iron has been known since ancient times and it is unknown who first discovered it. *The word iron is pronounced EYE-ern. *Evidence suggest that people have been using iron for atleast 5000 years. *Iron is the cheapest and one of the most abundant of all metalls comprising nearly 5.6% of the earths crust and nearly all of its core. *IRON is a solid and classified as a metal. *Iron is primarily obtained from the minerals hematite (Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4). The minerals taconite, limonite (FeO(OH)nH2O) and siderite (FeCO3) are other important sources. *Irons boiling point is 2861 degrees celcius and its melting point is at 1538 degrees celcius.
