The Silk Road
The purpose of the Silk Road was to promote trade across Europe, Asia, North Africa, and the Mediterranean as well as create a way to connect them all together. The main reason that the Silk Road was created was to buy and sell Chinese silk, which is also how it gets its name. There were two main parts of the Silk Road: the West and the East. They were both very dangerous for different reasons. The East is mostly desert, therefore, people used camels and caravans to carry the goods. One had to beware of sandstorm and bandits. The West is mostly composed of mountains; some peaks reaching over 20,000 feet. Most travelers used yak to carry their supplies because they could stand the harsh weather. Headaches, dizziness, ringing to the ears due to lack of oxygen were some of the main problems that travelers had to overcome. Due to the Silk Road, economies flourished due to the new increase in money bring brought from their valuables. Not only did the Silk Road increase the amount of trading items, many other items were traded as well. The Silk Road made it easier for religions and traditions to be spread and passed along among other travelers. The Buddhist and the Greco-Buddhist faiths were the two most popular that were passed along. Using these new traditions and faiths, various societies were able to take this and apply it to their everyday lives.
