WHAT HAVE WE DONE?! Don't let your kids miss out on this!
We've got a problem. Let's save this sea.
July - September, 1989
Can you stand seeing so many people losing HOPE because of the destruction of this ONE sea?
August 12, 2003
BEFORE
AFTER
- The Aral Sea has shrunk by over 60% in the last 30 years. Water is drained from the rivers for cotton farming, making the sea saltier. More water is taken away for other reasons like farming and irrigation, - Because of this the water is contaminated with chemicals, pesticides, bacteria and viruses, and to make things worse, dust that contains toxic gets blown into the sea as well.
- As the Aral Sea shrinks, the climate gets hotter and hotter. - That makes the water evaporate more, causing the water levels to lessen and the salt levels to increase.
- This is a picture of farming/ irrigation. - When the salt levels increase, fishes and other living things in the water die. - Fishermen lose their jobs and houses because of this lack of fish.
- Chemicals from nearby factories release dangerous chemicals into the sea. - People living there get breathing problems, and other serious conditions like throat cancer, and diseases caused by microorganisms.
SOLUTIONS!
- Dikes and dams are being built to help recover the sea. - In Kazakhstan, they've bulit a $68 million dam project to reverse the disaster. -In the north part, the Aral Sea has gotten 40% of it's water back. -They are building a second dam by 2010.
