grown deep
like the rivers.
My soul has
Ancient, dusky
when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans
rivers.
and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi
I've known rivers.
and I've seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset.
I looked in the Nile
and it lulled me to sleep.
I built my hut near the Congo
when dawns were young.
I bathed in the Euphrates
deep like the rivers.
My soul has grown
I've known rivers acient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins.
