How can we learn from the past to inform our future? We can take mistakes or unuseful things that were done in the past and use them so that we don't make the same mistakes. One example of this in horticulture is when people used toxic chemicals to kill pests on crops, this was very bad for humans health and the envionment so later on more organic pesticides were made as humans realised that this was a bad mistake.
What method or methods are better for growing crops? was it available 30 years ago? One of the best methods for growing crops is, as some people have found, hydroponics, which is when you grow plants in water instead of soil, so you are relying on the plants to take nutrients out of the water not the dirt. This is a great way of growing crops because: -They (the crops) are not as likely to get attacked by pests or, if an indoor system, the weather. -Much higher crop yields than growing with soil. - It can be used in places where ordinary agriculture or gardening is impossible. - much more sustainable because of the fact that not as much pesticide or fertiliser is lost due to rain runoff and This type of growing, though it seems very modern was actually, according to hieroglyphic records was first attempted by ancient Egyptians! Although it has definitely progressed more than when it was first started.
have modifications been made in packaging of fruit and vegetables? why? Packaging: this is a big issue for companies like zespri (kiwifruit) and Enza (apples) who go through tons of packaging waste each year. Many of the bigger fruit and vegetable companies are now changing to cleaner and more envionment friendly fruit boxes, stickers etc. They are biodegradable, meaning when discarded they will rot away much quicker than normal packaging.
How are crop damages overcome? Was it different in the past as to what methods are used now? One of the most well known methods of controlling pests is now pesticides, chemicals that will kill off unwanted bugs on your crops and harvests. This was available 30 years ago but back then the chemicals were much harsher on the envionment and peoples health. Pesticides used back then were chemicals such as lead, mercury and sulfurs and were spread over crops, The only thing bad about these pesticides was that they were asscoiated with many major health problems such as cancer and respiratory problems. Now though there has been an introduction of many new more natrual chemicals, nicer to us and the environment!
