Mao Zedong belived the support of the of the peasants was important to the Chinese Communists
Mao's army would grow in size and strength with the support from the peasants.
Mao treated the peasants fairly and politely. He also paid for the food they required.
In 1934 the communists, led by Mao, fled from Chiangs armies. the 6,000 miles march, known as the Great March, started out with 90,000 troops but by the end only several thousand remained.
