Wilma got polio when she was young and wore leg braces most of her childhood. She learned to walk and became an athlete.“When I was five, I spent most of my time trying to figure out how to get my (leg) braces off,” She said.

''Wilma helped break racial barriers and inspire african american woman to do equally as good. She also convinced everyone that you can overcome obstacles. At one time, she had polio but overcame it because she belived in herself. That is motivation for everyone, including disabled people.'' -Scott
