The play Antigone by Jean Anouilh and the novel The Outsider by Albert Camus symbolically reveal elements of the individual or society through animal references. Within Antigone the rebellious central character is continually associated with animals and animal behaviour. This invites the audience to see in Antigone as not only different to society but also wild and untameable. The nature of society is also revealed as lonely. Animals referenced within The Outsider reinforce similar ideas expressed in Antigone and through this Camus criticises elements of society
