Magazines were the last of the print media to become popular, but they became the first national medium. They also became the first of all the specialized media, following an evolutionary pattern that all media tend to follow. Today's magazine publishing industry is built primarily around consumer and trade magazines. The players in this industry consist mostly of those in editorial, advertising, and circulation departments. To become successful, magazines resort to techniques that lead to a number of controversies. Some magazine covers have been honored as works of art, and some have been controversial. Rolling Stone in 1981 had a cover photo of John Lennon curled into a fetal position atop a fully clothed Yoko Ono. That cover was number one out of all the magazine covers ever published. GQ and Playboy are especially known for their provocative front covers, and that's what gets them sales. Sex sells as the saying goes, but it primarily applies to magazines of all print media because a magazine has many pages filled with pictures.
