A 13 year old girl named Joey is deaf except for very loud noises. Her mom does not want her to learn sign language. Joey is out wandering and she comes across an old man who owns a chimpanzee. Its name is Sukari. She soon becomes very fond of Sukari and the man. The chimpanzee doesn't know how to talk except through sign language. Joeys hopes are high. Along the way tragedy happens and it's all up to Joey to save Sukari.
Ginny Rorby: This author was inspired to wrote this story based on a newspaper article she read about a chimpanzee who had spent her life with a family and then had been set free to live in the wild. The chimpanze died within 8 months of living in the wild though.
