The mass production of bicyles changed womens lives by giving women a feeling of self-reliance and freedom. Womens clothing styles changed, they started wearing shirtwaists, which is a type of tailored blouse, and split skirts to ride bikes more comfortably. Also, the bicyle freed women from haveing to have a chaperone with them at all times in public.
The begining of the 20 century started a time of new leisure activitys. Sports were popular amoung Americans at the turn of the century because sports became a symbol and expression of the 20 century.. Sports personified the struggle and rush of the booming, bustling country.
Joseph Pulitzer, owner of the New York World, used popular innovations such as comics, sports coverage, and womens news to draw in the readers. His competetor William Randolph Hearst , owner of the New York Morning Journal, tried to out do Pulitzer by posting exaggerated tales of personal scandals, cruelty, and hypnotism, and even imaginary conquest to mars to attract readers.
Highly popular dime novels featured adventure stories and typically glorified tales of the west and features heroes. Most people preferred to read light fiction, and most books sold for ten cents.
