Southern Pine Beetle by: Samantha Thomas
EFFECTS -(1) Tennessee Cumberland Plateau: last 4 years 50 to 70% of pines have been devoured by the southern pine beetle because there has been an increase of pine available, which took over the native forest -Thus, the paper industry has been losing hundreds of millions of dollars -The south actally produces a quarter of the world's paper and 60 percent of Amrica's wood, which leaves the southern industry in deep trouble -(2) South Carolina: A total of 31 South Carolina counties were trapped for SPB in 2005. This protocol includes monitoring 3 pheromone traps in each county for 28 days. Results help determine a prediction for population trend. The results of 2005 conclude that most of S.C. can expect a low level loss to southern pine beetle. -The damage due to the southern pine beetle in South Carolina as a total ranges from $10-$20 million. Control that is being done about this is a method called, the cut and leave technique, where infested trees and a buffer of apparently uninfested pines are cut but not salvaged.
BASIC FACTS -Appearance: Reddish brown to black, 2-4 mm in length, and stoutly cylindrical in shape -Hosts: Various species of pines -Life Cycle: complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages (28-54 days) -Beetle populations will increase dramatically to epidemic proportions -Epidemic Cycle usually last 3 to 4 years
Also known by its Scientific Name: Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann
Found in: southern and southeastern U.S., Mexico, and Central America
Lastest known release: 1960s
