All Quiet on the Western Front by: Erich Maria Remarque
The Everlasting
Effects of War
''It is as though formerly, we were coins of different provences: and now we are melted down, and all bear the same stamp.''
As a result of war, soldiers lose their identity and sense of belonging to a normal society. Regular citizens cannot understand all the horrors the soldiers have seen, so the soldiers become isolated and disconnected. Like identical minted coins, the soldiers are branded by their war experiences. They become of little value to the rest of the world when their time of duty is is up.
