The cotton fields were worked by slaves. Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. It put even more black men to work. The Slave population increased nearly 70% in 20 years (From 1790 to 1810)!
As American settlers moved westward they brought along their slaves. The slaves worked in the cotton fields.
All people: Men, women, even children worked in the mills.
There was a clash during this period of history having to do with progress. With the new inventions of the cotton gin, mills, assembly lines, etc., many people were not getting paid fairly or paid at all. This was not progress.
Jacksonian Democracy- Era of The Common Man
This period of time is known as the Jacksonian Democracy- the era of the common man, Are all of these inventions really benefiting the common man? They have increased slavery (cotton gin), and created a form of cheap labor (assembly line).
