Georgette Heyer seems to love this era. She is a believer in love and romance, but she also believes that women are capable of succeeding in anything they want. Such as operating a business and getting the man they are in love with. The major symbol I identified was the prejudiceness. Adrian and Max's family thought Deb was a wench and was only looking for someone with money to get them out of debt just because she operated a gameing house. Yes, it did, I didn't think it was fair that Adrian's mother didn't like Deb just because she operated the gaming house and didn't want to get to know her.
Summary of Faro's Daughter This book is about the troubles of love and the conflicts that come with it. The book opens with Adrian's mother asking for Max's help to stop Adrain from marring Deborah Grantham. They do not approve because she is not in the same class as he is, she is the neice of a gaming house owner. Max tried to bribe her with twenty thousand pounds to have her refuse Adrian. Deb became furious and refused. Max then won the bills and mortgage to the gaming house in a card game. Unknown to Deb, two or her friends tricked Max to come to the park and kidnapped him, locking him in the cellar of the gaming house. Max then tricks Deb and frees himself. Deb gives shelter to a young girl, Phoebe, who is hiding from her family because they trying to force her to marry. While hiding in Deb's home Adrian falls in love with her. He tell Deb that he can't marry her worried that she will be upset. Deb tells him that she put them together so they would fall in love. She helps Adrian secretely leave with Pheobe to Wales where they are married. Adrian comes home to tell his family and excitedly tells Max he has married. Max rushes to Deb's house to tell her how horrible a person she is and that he loved her. Deb is so angry at the insults he says to her that she kicks him out of the house. Her friend promises revenge and plans to kidnapped Max's sister for randsom. Deb received the letter telling her about this and is so upset she goes to let Max know. He tells her that he knew and the plan was foiled. Deb cries, not knowing what to do. She admits her love for Max but is afraid what his family will say about their love, he tells her not to worry. There are several pivotal scenes. The first was when Deb went to the cellar to see Max after leaving him with the candle to scare off the rats. When she discovered his burns and wanted to doctor them so he wouldn't be in pain or get them infected. Max was shocked that she would treat him with tenderness. The second pivotal scene was after the race when Adrian was telling Phoebe about the excitement of the race and they realized they had fallen in love. Adrian insisted on telling Deb, he did not want to decive her. She told him that she purposely put them together. The last pivotal scene was after Adrain told Max about getting married and Max misunderstood thinking is was Deb. He went to her house in a jealous rage! My favorite part was when Max went to Deb in a jealous rage, because I knew he was wrong and couldn't wait to see how the author would let their love happen.
Main Characters: Max Ravencar Deborah Grantham Adrain Mablethorpe
Setting: This book is set in London during the Regency years. In Africa the brutal kidnapping of the people was ending because the African Slave Trade was coming to an end, Bolivar had liberated South America.
Max Ravenscar is the type of guy who will do whatever it takes to get what he wants no matter who gets in his way. This is the type of attitude that made Max my favorite character.
Faro's Daughter takes place in the 1790 to the early 1830's , known as the Regency years. This is a romantic time when the mode of transportation was horse and carts. Women were not allowed to go out without an escort. Women were easily distressed. The story was not about a historical person or event, it was love story that took place during the Regency years. The entire story seemed real, because when love is involved people will do almost anything. I didn't read any inaccurate information in the story.
