Charles XII of Sweden
By: Doug L.
Charles XII goes down in history as a virtuous and stoic, yet vigorous and valiant leader of Sweden between the late 1600s and the early 1700s. Charles assumed the throne at a surprisingly young age of 15, immediately following the death of his father, Charles XI. Little Charles was forced into war and conflict from the opposing countries of Poland , Denmark, and especially Russia. Charles led his army to some astounding victories versus all three of these countries to regain territory he had lost to them. Russia was the only remaining enemy once Charles was through regaining territory, which he then tried to invade to prevent further expansion. Due to a harsh winter his army faced in the Ukraine, and the fact that he could not lead his own men because of a sniper wound in his foot, his army was sadly annihilated ion the battlefield. In late years, charles attempted to invade Norway, but in his second attempt, he was shot in the head and died in 1718. His legacy remains as his bravery in war, devotion to his country, and his overall virtue and stong willpower as a person and a leader.
