The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade
Africa Slaves were either captured by the Europeans and taken, or the Africans would capture their own and send them to the Europeans for their goods. Slavery was already a problem in Africa but the Trans Atlantic trade vastly expanded the market and fueled wars all over Africa.
Europe Europe had colonies in America where they needed cheap labor to fuel their plantations. So Europe traded goods for slaves to Africa. A motive for trading the Africans to trade the slaves were the European goods such as: cloth, firearms, ammunition, and rum. .
Overview The trans-Atlantic slave trade was a trade connection between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. It lasted from the 1500's to 1870 and over 10 million Africans were transported as slaves.
Extras The African slaves had to endure horrible conditions when being transported. They were crammed very tightly together and several tried to commit suicide because of the conditions. Slaves had to be force fed to prevent them from starving themselves. There were even incidents of slaves breaking free and drowning themselves in the ocean. The immediate reactions of Europe were that they became richer and more men became landowners. Some African reactions were to capture slaves to sell while the some slaves reactions were to kill themselves.
America The slaves were sent here to work on the plantations so that the goods could be sent to Europe. This allowed Europe to become very rich. Slaves from Africa were chosen over Native AMerican slaves because they were less likely to run away and they had a high immune system which kept them alive longer.
