Nicaragua
Nicaragua is located in Central America
It is the largest country in Central America. Low mountains and hills separate the west from the east.
Most people live on the western side of the country. The side on the Caribbean is sparsely populated. Managua is the most populated place, with slightly over one million people.
Sixty percent of the population is Roman Catholic, and the traditions remain a part of family life. They do have the freedom of religion.
Social status is determined by land, possessions, and money. The ones with the most are the ones that are higher on the social ladder. Family is important in the rural areas.
Natural resources include gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, and timber.
Nicaragua’s economy relies on agricultural exports. Its economy is in trouble. Stabilization efforts have lowered the inflation rate. The currency is the crdoba.
The people are generally sociable. In rural areas, families eat together, but that doesn’t happen often in the cities. Most meals include beans and rice. Spanish is the main language.
Nicaragua is a republic. The president is Daniel Ortega. The voting age is sixteen.
Forests cover about one third of the country. It has a tropical climate, but the highlands are cooler. High humidity, average temp. 80 degrees.
