Your words danced around me in confusing circles I didn't want to understand. I mistook the tears on my cheeks for butterfly kisses. That little flame of hope in my heart blinded me to all but you. And I thought it was perfect. But I was wrong. You were the sun. I clung to your glaring light, fearing to stray too far should I be consumed by the darkness. And you held me at arm's reach, careful not to let me too close but not realising that your hold on me was enough, that you had reached out and grabbed my heart. I thought that you would keep it forever. But I was wrong. Your fingers were icicles drawn against my burning skin. I needed your hold to stay alive, to keep from burning up in my own flames. I took your icy blast as proof that you were made for me, two sides of the same coin. I saw you as the light in my darkness, and I as yours. But I was wrong. When you left, I expected you to take everything of me with you. I couldn't live without your cool touch. Your light kept the darkness at bay. My heart rested in your hands, and I couldn't live without it, without your ice to soothe my fire. But I was wrong. You were gone. And yet somehow, light remained. The warm glow of a summer's day lit my path, a lantern on the darkest night. Without you I burned. I burned with passion for all that was life. I burned with a thirst for knowledge and understanding. And I rose from my own ashes, reborn greater than you. I thought that you were the world. But I was wrong. --Reed Wynters
