Ocean Zones
Littoral Zone- Goes to shoreline to 600ft deep; not meaured in depth, but measured in how far it goes out into the ocean; it has a good amount of sunlight; This zone is where the tides are on the coast. Some animals on this zone are: mollusks, barnacles, and crab. Some plants at this zone are: algae, red coral, and macrophytes. The themperature is near freesine to around 90 degrees ferinheight.
Sublittoral Zone- Goes to low-tide line out to 200 meters. The zone has similar characteristics as the littoral zone. It has a good amount of sunlight, it is measured in how far it goes into the ocean, and both zones are the zone where the tides are. The sublittoral zone also has lots of animals and life. Some animals in the zone are: shrimp, sea urchins, tube worms, and sponges. Some plants in the zone are: red algae, and the hudson plant. The temperature in the zone is about 40 degrees ferinheight.
Epipelagic Zone- IThe zone is located on the continental shelf .It goes to the surface to about 200 meters deep. Like the Littoral zone and the Sublittoral zone, it is measured in how far it goes into the ocean..This zone has lots of sunlight, at the bottom of the zone, it starts the thermo cline, and it is called the sunlight zone. Some animals in the zone are: sharks, rays, jellyfish, and seals. Some animals in the zone are: algae, coral, phytoplankton, and zooplankton. THe temperature in the zone is near freezing to 90 degrees in ferinheight.
Mesopelagic zone- The zone is on the continental shelf. Its depth ranges to 200 meters to 1000 into the ocean. It is measured in how deep it is.. Unlike the littoral zones and the epipelagic zone, it has a faint light. There is a great, change in temperature from the epipelagic zone and this zone. This zone is also called the twilight zone. Some animals in the zone are: bioluminescent animals, blob fish, and shail fish. Some plants in this zone are: zooplankton, and sponges. The temperature in this zone is near freezing.
Bathypelagic zone- this zone is on the continental slope and it is 1000 to 4000 meters into the ocean. The zone is measured in how deep it is.The zone has only visable light that is produced by creatures in the zone. The water pressure reaches 5250 pounds per square inch. The zone is also called the midnight zone because of its weakness in light. Some animals in the zone are:sperm whales, vampire squids, snake dragonfish, and angler fish. There are no plants that live in this zone and and farther into the ocean. The temperature in the zone is near freezing.
