The question is not "how can students be motivated?" but rather "how can educators deter from deminishing- even destroying- student motivation and morale? - Richard F. Bowman
Are We Motivated Yet?
- Choose lessons that are culturally relative to students' community. - Understand and use cultural trends for classroom advantage, but do not slip into stereotyping. -Establish a warm, open, diverse, friendly, organized and structured classroom environment that encourages positive advancement through adversity. -Recognize success on individual and group levels.
Teachers should involve students in decision making with regard to classroom behavior guidelines... in addition to allowing students to make decisions about their learning. - Kaplan and Maehr
Classroom environments and evaluations should reward academic venturesomness as well as learning from one's mistakes. -Kaplan and Maehr
- Allow students to participate in classroom decisions (rules, projects, due dates, etc) - Recognize and encourage all forms of participation -Provide multiple and varied opportunities for students to work cooperatively and independently -Provide feedback that encourages improvement, not punish mistakes
Remember to stay positive and believe in your students
