A sailboat is a real world example of similar triangles because the main sail and the smaller sail are in proportion to each other and the angle measures are equal.
Similar triangles means the triangles should look almost exactly the same with subtlte differences. The size can be different but the angles are the same.
I would prove two triangles similar by proving two corresponding angles congruent and using the Angle Angle Theorum.
