The radio we know today was quite different in the 1920's, in fact, the original radio was used for communication only. Radio as we know it came about by the genius of a man known as Lee De Forest. He created a new part of the radio called a triode which allowed for the transmitting of signals over extreme distances.

Radio stations began appearing all around the country, the first being NBC and CBS. In the beginning of radio, news, entertainment and music were all broadcast. Programs being broadcast at the time included Perry Mason, The Lone Ranger, Gun-smoke, The Jack Benny Program, Gangbusters, and The Shadow.
Broadcasting
A broadcast causing much of America to go into a frenzy. Most citizens took it so seriously that the announcer almost lost his job.
