Fletcher Henderson 1897 - 1952
James Fletcher Henderson was born on December 18, 1897 in Cuthbert, Georgia. Fletcher's parents were strict, and demanded he play music. He began studying piano at the age of six, and was many times locked in a room to practice for long amount of time. Practice made perfect as Fletcher developed an acute sense of pitch and musical proficiency. His wholesome musical education never lead him to a musical career right away.
In 1916 Henderson attended Atlanta University to study mathematics with chemistry. By 1920, he set foot in the real world, New York for that matter, and went out looking for a job. Henderson could not get employed jobs for black chemists were scarce. Emplaoyers were quick-to-judge without giving him a chance show show his skill and potential. He began working for Pace & Handling Publishing House as a pianist, demonstrating and promoting songs. His musical skill was highly valued.
Fletcher's career eventually led him to working for Black Swan Records as their director. He began to develop a new form of music incorporating the looseness of the blues with modern European styles. By 1923 Fletcher's work was in high demand and worked for Black Swan, Columbia, Paramount, and Edison labels. The best musicians in Harlem were brought together to make an 8-man group called "The Henderson Band." Louis Armstrong was the greatest asset the band with his magnificent trumpet playing. Louis taught the trumpet section much about true jazz, and the whole band helped Louis improve his sight-reading skills. Armstrong left in 1924, but the bend held strong. The Band was on many tours and definitely a hit.
