Confucianism

FOUNDER: K 'ung Ch'iu - Confucius
HOLY BOOK: Analects. This was the earliest and most authentic record of Confucius's ideas recorded by his students.
LEADERS: No clergy.
CORE BELIEFS: Had three basic concepts: The importance of family, respect for one's elders, and respect for the past. Also, that human biengs are teachable, improvable, and perfectible through great endeavour.
EVENTS: Confucianism was created in the late Zhou period. Although the exact date of Confucius's birth is uncetain, it is celebrated on September the 28th. In Taiwan, it is an official holiday, and is known as Teacher's Day. By the sixteenth century C.E., every district in China had a temple dedicated to confucius. Confucius's teachings and ideas were compiled by his students into a book called, The Analects, in around 400 B.C.E.
SYMBOLS: YIN-YANG The Yin-Yang symbol was made to show dualism, or the two-sidedness of nature. Yin, the bottom half of the circle, represents the earth, females, and being passive. Yang, the top half of the circle, represents heaven, males, and activity. People believed that they could achieve harmony through balacing Yin and Yang. Yin is also known as the tiger, and Yang as the dragon. The sybol as a whole also sybolizes opposite forces of the world working together, and social order.
