Climate: Weather patterns vary from sunshine to cyclones, which there are about 28 per year. Daytime temperatures are between 24 and 31 degrees Celcius.
Government: Most countries are monarchies and republics, except Fiji, which is a military dictatorship
Economy: The economies in the region differ, but all countries depend on tourism and agriculture. Weak economies on the islands have resulted in more povertry.
Ethnic Groups and Culture: There are three major ethnic groups: Polynesians in the east, Melanesians in the southwest, and Micronesians in the west. On the islands, family is important. They are often large with a lot of children.
The major religion is Christianity.
Standards of Living: While the living standard is high in Australia and New Zealand, poverty is a growing problem on the Pacific Islands. Some of the causes for this are poor economic performance over the last two decades, population increase, and urban drift.. Obesity is another problem on the islands. A leading cause of heart diseases, the problem began when the islanders became dependent on Western food.
