Kenya
Kenya lies across the equator in east central-Africa, on the coast of the India. It borders Somalia to the east, Ethiopia to the north, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west and Sudan to the north-west. The capital city of Kenya is Nairobi and it has some other large cities which are Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nyeri, Machakos and Meru. The total population in Kenya lays on nearly 38 million people and 3 million 43 thousand 1 hundred people live in the capital city. The word Kenya comes from Kenya Mount which is one of the highest peaks in Africa, and the actual meaning of the word Is Gods resting place. In Kenya there are about 40 ethnic groups. The groups of tribes are called Bantu which came from the Western Africa, the Nilotic people who came from Sudan and the Hamitic which came from Ethiopia and Somalia. The main tribes are: Kikuyu 22%, Luhya 14%, Luo 13%, Kalenjin 12%, Kamba 11%, Kisii 6% other African 15%, non African 1%. There are also some groups of people who form a very small population such as the tribe of El Molo. English is the official spoken language in Kenya as well as Swahili. But the language varies on where you are in Kenya. In the city they will speak English, Swahili and Kikuyu. On the coast you will get different dialects and there are also tribal languages. As a tourist in Kenya I would visit the main capital Nairobi to see the Kenya National Museum, Snake farm, Nairobi national park and other big tourist attractions. I would also see Masai Mara which is the richest place in Kenya when it comes to see wild animals. I would also see Laikipia which is another rich place on animals. Laikipia is home to the largest elephant population in Kenya and was made famous by a book written by Kuki Gallman “I dreamed of Africa” Kenya was first populated with a few groups of tribes which were Kikuyu, Kamba, Luo and Masai. These tribes shared the same area of land even though they all had different origins. It wasen’t before the 19th century people from the outside started to enter the country. 1893 Uganda was under the British Control slowly followed by Kenya. But the British people were only interested in controlling the rich resources of Uganda. Kenya became independent in 1963 with their first president Jomo Kenyatta.
