Caesars Campaigns in Gaul
This depicts the ancient tribes of Gaul that Caesar fought to add Gaul to the Empire. The largest tribes are Helvetii, Aedui, and Boii.
Julius Caesar
Ambiorix was the leader of the Belgae. Ambriorix had destroyed an entire legion or roman soldiers by the time Caesar had arrived with a relief force(54 b.c.e.). In (536 b.c.e.) Ambiorix again threatened Roman Gaul with a series of attacks. Caesar responded by finding and destroying Ambriorix's allies. Ambiorix had learned about the Roman weakness of guerilla warfare. Caesar was frustrated that he could not find Ambiorix and issued a reward for his head. Caesar then found Ambiorix's own people, the Eburonas without mercy he slaughtered them. Amborix was never found and was supposedly dead.
The Helvetii Tribe was located in modern day Switzerland. The tribe had planned to march through the roman territory, but the allied Roman tribe, the Aedui, watched over the territory. The Helvetii tribe consisted of 370,000 tribesmen, but only 110,000 were soldiers. Caesar's army consisted of six legions(240,000 troops) met in battle. After several large skirmishes. Caesar ossupied the high ground giving him the advantage. Caesar lured them into a poorly matched battle near the Aedui capital of Bibracte, Caesar crushed the opposing Helvetii.
Caesar was originally assigned to serve as Governer of a small province known as Cisalpine Gaul, which was located in norther Italy. He was sent here by Pompey and Crassus hoping that Caesar would not be able to accomplish anything. Caesar would use this province as a steping stone in his campiagns in Gaul, or better known today as the country of France.
