My product is the plastic button. Buttons are massively used in the clothing industry. They benefit the economy because they are such a universally used item. Buttons are always in demand. They are simpler and cheaper than other items commonly used to fasten fabric such as zippers and velcro. Buttons are quite beneficial to society, for as I've said, everyone uses them.
Plastic buttons are made from polyester, which is a plastic. Plastic is chemically created using petroleum. My company buys our petroleum from Occidental Petroleum, which has its headquarters in Los Angeles, CA and extracts its oil from South America, North Africa, and the Middle East. Occidental Petroleum ships its petroleum to us via the Union Pacific train and I transport it to my chemical plant with trucks. The chemical plant transports the finished polyester to my button factories with trucks as well.
My company is organized vertically. I started out with one local button factory, and bought another in Buda. After a number of years, I accumulated enough money that I could potentially purchase a local chemical plant. I decided to do so, and the chemical plant now supplies my button factories with polymer.
My company benefits the community because plastic buttons are very commonly used. Most people you encounter have at least one button somewhere on their clothing, and it's likely made of plastic. Buttons made of natural materials such as shell, wood, or ivory tend to be more expensive to produce than plastic buttons, so the general consumer will be more likely to purchase an item that uses plastic buttons. Plastic buttons can be dyed to have a very realistic natural appearance, so the consumer does not sacrifice visual appeal when the plastic button is purchased.
