The Coen brothers follow up their Oscar winner, No Country For Old Men, with this fun black comedy. The film follows a load of comical characters including two nutty gym employees, a paranoid Treasury agent, and a bickering couple who all add their own flair to the film. After Oswald Cox's memoir goes missing, the chase is on to find it, but others believe this information is of a higher, government need-to-know-basis, and decide to return it, of course as blackmail. Frances McDormand leads the cast as Linda Litzke, half of the zany gym employee duo who strives for perfection. She performs this character one hundred percent all of the time. She is never better, nor worse on screen in any scene, very consistent. This performance is up there with the likes of Fargo and Almost Famous. George Clooney plays her opposite, holding the male leading role. As Harry Pfarrer, he gives his best comedic performance of his career. Known mostly for more dramatic roles of the small and big screen, this particular turn at comedy is brilliant. The supporting players also leave a great impression. John Malkovich easily gives the best performance of the film, in my opinion. As Cox, he is witty, sarcastic, and a really big jerk. Not much else to say about the performance except for that this could possibly be my favorite performance of his. Brad Pitt almost matches Malkovich as Chad Feldheimer. Charming, stupid, and innocently funny, Pitt is responsible for a good amount of the comedy involved in this black comedy. Tilda Swinton, fresh off her Oscar win, plays Cox's wife, Katie. She plays bitch hardcore, and I loved every minute of it. Not only did she play that well, she made it funny and likable. Joel and Ethan Coen do a great job with directing the film. Maybe it is not the best work of theirs, but it does the job. More importantly, their screenplay bleeds humor. Not a scene occurs that doesn't have you busting a gut, a true original comedy. Overall, this film is fun. It has a great ensemble cast, one of the best of the year. Some parts of the film lack, but I was never bored with it. 83% / 100%
