Janie is the main character, and protagonist. She is slightly headstrong and a little stubborn. However, Janie is very loyal and friendly, but while she married to Joe Stark she is detached from the others of Eatonville. She doesn't like lonliness and spends most of the book looking for the right guy for her. Janie is very beautiful according to the men of Eatonville. She has long thick brown hair and she is african-american. Despite her older age when she meets Tea Cake, she is still pretty and looks young.
Symbolism Symbolism a big part of Their Eyes Were Watching God. Zora Neale Hurston constantly uses it to represent a major idea or theme in the book and cause the reader to infer and think about what it symbolizes. For example: ''He [Tea Cake] could be a bee to a blossom- a pear tree blossom in the spring. He seemed to be crushing scent out of the world with his footsteps. Crushing aromatic herbs with every step he took. Spices hung about him. He was a glance from God. (103) This, or Tea Cake, symbolizes how special he is and how he is the one for Janie. This can be inferred from where the author says, ''He was a glance from God.''
''She called in her soul to come an see.'' (184)
''Love is lak the sea. It's uh movin' thing, but still and all, it takes it shape from de shore it meets, and it's different with every shore.'' (182)
Foreshadowing Zora Neale Hurston, the author of this book, uses foreshadowing to hook the reader at the beginning of the book. She begins the book with, ''So the beginning of ths was a woman and she had come back from burying the dead.'' This already foreshadows the death of a character in the book.
Tone The tone of this book is light and slightly humorous, although the protagonist goes through some major cnallenges. Though the author wants to convey the points on love in the book, she doesn't make the tone depressing or saddening.. Although some of the problems Janie faces are written very straigtforward and are almost never implied, the book still have a light-hearted quality to it due to its tone.
Theme Love is not easily achieved; you might spend your whole life looking for it, and it may not be what you expect.
