Egg Drop Eggstravaganza
Project Description: Egg Drop eggstravaganza is a project in which we will make egg cases to drop off the bleachers. The goal of the Project is for your egg to fall inside the case without it breaking when it hits the ground. The purpose of this experiment is for us to better understand momentum and impulse in an intresting way.
Describe your egg case : My egg case's frame is a round pajama box made of metal and sheer elastic material. Inside it is filled with cottonballs and above that, are rubber bands tied to the outside rim and then all connected to the felt cloth enclosure in the middle acting as a trampoline for the egg. The cottonballs and rubberbands increase the time of landing therefore decrease the force on the egg.
What is momentum? Momentum is the mass of an object multiplied by the velocity of that object.

What is inpulse? Impulse is the force of impact multiplied by the time of impact.

All good boxers know that to make a hit less forcefull you must follow through with the punch becuse it increases the time of impact. Gymnast use the concept when tumbling. The mats that they use increase the time of impact therefor decrease the force of impact on the gymnast's body.
Application to the Real World
Why did the egg cases have approximately the same change in momentum when they hit the ground? The egg cases all had approximately the same change in momentum because they all had the same mass (one lb). They were also all dropped at around the same time so the cases had around the same velocity when they hit the ground.
Why did all of the egg cases have approximately the same impulse? All of the egg cases had approximately the same impulse because each case was dropped with the same amount of force and they all hit the ground at about the same time.
If all of the egg cases have the same impulse, what will vary with each egg case? Why? What is the goal? The design of each egg case will be the variable that changes between each case. The survival of the egg depends on the design of the egg case. To ensure that your egg doesn't break, you want to increase the time of impact which would decrease the force on your egg making it more likely that it will not break
Did your egg suvive? Yes, my egg did suvive. When the class went to the bottom of the bleachers to see the results of the fall, my egg case had broken open and the insides went everywhere. Even though my egg case didn't suvive, my egg did!!

This video is of another kind of egg drop experiment where they drop a egg on top of a ball.
