Characters- Holly- maincharacter Ms. Leone- the one who got her started on the journal Mrs. Bender- foster mom Mr. Bender- foster dad Louis K. Palmer- ''mom'' to get in the shelter Venus- a homeless ''friend'' she met Walt Lewis-a guy who helped her Valerie Lewis- his wife who also helped Martin- a creepy homeless person Sammie- a friend she meets who helps her Vera and Meg- two ladies who adopted her and saved her life Characterization- Holly- is an energetic, strong willed, smart, recourceful, and independent girl. If she wasn't any of these she wouldn't have runaway Mr. and Mrs. Bender- are cruel, mean, and sick people. Mr. Bender abused her and they both locked her up in the basement everyday. Louis K. Palmer- she was sweet but she had problems. Holly used her to get into the shelter but they got along great. Venus- is nice and kind at first but then she changes and ''stabs'' Holly in the back and takes something that is dear to Holly. Walt+Valerie Lewis- are kind, caring, sweet, and very welcoming. They took Holly in and took her in for awhile. Martin- is a mischevious, sleezy, creepy, and a nasty guy. Holly met him at the soup kitchen and he followed her to her ''house'' when he was about to do something until Sammie saved her. Sammie- is caring and helps Holly find her new permanent home. Vera+Meg- are the two ladies that Sammie introduced to Holly. They are kind, strict, respectful, and caring. Without them Holly would still have been homeless and wouldn't have a loving family. Setting- The setting takes place in many places during the story mostly states in the east which was where whe was heading. It is usually during the day and night when she is writing in her journal. For over a year she ranaway and was homeless. Plot- Runaway by Wendelin Van Draanen is about a girl named Holly who lost her mother when she was little and has been bouncing from one foster parents to another. All of them were aweful. Her last foster parents abused her. many times. She's ranaway many times but this is the first time she actually gets away. Holly goes through a very hard and tretcherous journey just to have her freedom she meets many people on her journey. During this whole journey she writes everything she experienced and felt in a little journal that her teacher gave her. Finally, it's been over a year shince shes been homeless just when she was about to give up she finds a loving family just for her. Theme- The theme of the story is that if you runaway it can lead to bad things and many struggles but also good things can come out of it like for Holly a new family who loves her and won't abuse her. and her freedom Recommendation- I loved this book, and I would recommend this book to anybody because it is a great adventures book with lots of conflicts to keep you wanting to read more.
