Passamezzo Antico: Zarabanda - Hesprion XXI, Jordi Savall
The most common form of the Black Death was called the bubonic variant. In this form of the virus, swellings appeared in the groin and under the armpit. These swellings were called tumors. The swellings spread to the rest of the body, and then black and purple spots appeared on the body. With this form of the Black Plague, many people died within three days of the appearance of the first "tumor", and the majority of them never even had a fever or additional symptoms. It was highly contagious and people could get it simply by going near the sick or touching their clothes. The next form was the pneumonic plague. This form of the disease was spread by breathing. It attacked the respiratory system and people only lived for about 1 -2 days. The third form of the Black Death was the septicemic version which affected the blood.
Black Death
When the people first realized the gravity of the Black Death, they were scared. Different people reacted differently to the situation. Some people built small communities to separate themselves from everyone else. They locked themselves up in houses with healthy people and spent their time limiting excess from their lives, not talking about death and sickness, eating fine foods sparingly, and playing and listening to music. Other people spent their time having fun, eating fine foods, going to taverns. By doing this, they avoided the sick. They wanted to act like nothing bad was happening and they were in denial. A third group of people did not shut themselves up in their houses, but they did not go crazy partying like the second group of people. They carried herbs with them because the scent comforted the brain. It covered up the stench of rotting, dead bodies. The fourth group of people thought more cruelly. They thought that the only way to avoid the plague was to leave the sick people. They abandoned their cities, relatives, possessions, and homes.
There were many consequences of the Black Death. The people who maintained order in the cities were all sick, dead, or shut up in their houses, so people were free to do whatever they wanted. People abandoned each other, and they stopped helping their family and neighbors. This caused sick people to be left without care. Noble women exposed their bodies to their servants when they were sick, and this possibly lead to the surviving women to have looser morals.
