Rudoplh Valentino (above) was the 20's answer to Heartthrob of the Year. His motion pictures, such as, The Shiek, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, brought him great acknowledgement from the movie-going audience. (Namely the young girls.)
On October 6, 1927, Warner Bros. released the first movie with Vitaphone sound: The Jazz Singer. This was also Al Jolson's first hit picture. Although it probably wouldn't be accepted today because of the Jim Crow entertainment, it is undoubteddly a hallmark for the motion picture industry.
During this time, comedies were much enjoyed by the audience. Entertainers, such as Charlie Chaplin (pictured to the left as "The Tramp"), Fatty Arbuckle, and others kept them in stitches. Later, when the silent film was considered old fashioned, the audiences would look to the Marx Bros. and others for their comic relief.
Movies, Actors, and Actresses of the 20's
A director who would become famous, or rather "infamous", even after the silent movies were over was one Alfred Hitchcock. (pictured left) Movies he directed during the twenties included his premire film "The Pleasure Garden".
During the 20's, swashbuckling adventures were also in vogue as well as the comedy and romance stories. One highlighted Hollywood swordsman was Douglas Fairbanks Sr. (pictured left) He starred in famous films such as the two-toned color film"The Black Pirate", "Robin Hood". Perhaps his most famous media portrayal was that of Don Diego de la Vega... who is more commonly to the audience as "Zorro".
Along with the actors of the time, stunning actresses were acknowleged and made famous by their performances. Such famous ladies of the screen included Mary Pickfored (pictured above). As well as American actresses, foreign players debuted in Hollywood, such as Marlene Dietrich pictured left). Ms. Dietrich would go on to be a bright star in the talking pictures of the years to come
The last silent movies were shown in 1931. After that, they were no longer shown, due to the sound recording advancements.
Stars of the future movies that were in silent films included Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, and Gary Cooper. One however started then and has lived on to today: Mickey Mouse. His debut was in Walt Disney's famous "Steamboat Willie" (poster pictured left)
